For the past several months I have been praying for miracles. The world feels so crazy and angry, and while I am sure there are solutions, they seem to be distant dreams. So, even though I am not sure who I am praying to, or what a miracle would look like, I offer up invocations and appeals for some marvelous wonder that will shift the current trajectory of the world. Somehow today I realized that there are miracles occurring around me every single moment. Some are so small that I fail to appreciate them. This awareness started when I opened my car door and stood up, stretching after a long drive, and suddenly marveled at my body’s ability to balance and move. My legs stood and walked, while my heart circulated blood through my veins and arteries, while my lungs filled my body with oxygen. Each moment of my life, every time I have healed from a surgery or disease, is miraculous. In fact, given the challenges my body has faced, being joyfully alive is a miracle. Other miracles are too large and complex for me to even comprehend. There are wild changes in weather and politics, in polls and opinions, as if the world is shifting into a new dimension. But I am not sure which way it is moving. Perhaps miracles are best recognized in retrospect, and as time passes, I will be able to pinpoint the moment when life truly shifted. Or perhaps I am supposed to awaken to the notion that life in and of itself is a miracle. And that daily the world changes in ways that can, and do, lead to wonderous outcomes, if we would only notice. And yes, there are also frightening, and at times terrifying events, that could lead to disasters. But that has been true throughout time, and we are still here, living what feels like complicated lives that are full of wonders and marvels. Our lives often revolve around desires and issues that feel overwhelming and urgent. Then time passes, and we wonder why we were so upset, or so invested in a particular outcome. Some of our concerns are life and death, but so many that we obsess over are not. And if we are too busy focusing on what we feel will be life disasters, we will fail to see the miracles that surround us. I wish for you a sense of awe and beauty at the miracles that unfold around you with each breath you take.
