Breathing

Breathing is the music of our bodies. We dance to the symphony of a beating pulse, cells traveling together, synapses singing with an electrical current. The sounds of our bodies embracing life. Some of us meditate by listening to the harmonics that echo inside us. What greater miracle is there than the music of our living body?

It is said that silence is a form of prayer. The same could be said of the magical rhythm of our bodies. When we tune into our bodies, we also tune into our souls. We become aware of the unseen elements that make us living beings. We remember that there are many ways to connect with the deeper parts of ourselves.

Breath is a doorway into this experience. The easy and yet mystical inhalation and exhalation that feeds our bloodstream, and makes life possible. When we are sad or buried under life’s challenges, breathing deeply in our own rhythm centers us and helps us find our way in the darkness. Breath is a path that leads from fear to understanding, from pain to peace.

Breathing helps me walk with intention, helps me expand my spine, and stand taller. It helps me find an even stroke when I kayak in the lake. My bike rides are smoother, I hike more joyfully, and I find my rhythm when I dance. It is breath that brings my movements to life.

I have to be reminded to breathe during an intense workout or when I am frightened. How odd that I forget to fill my body with life-giving breath when I need it the most. When I need to move freely, to feel deeply, to be open to challenges and adventures, I need to breathe.

Maybe we all need to stop holding our breaths, to breathe deeply, and to fill the world with the energy of life. If this is the doorway to our awareness, then this is a way to bring a shift of consciousness to the planet. This means that if each of us breathes deeply with intention, we can change the world.
